Work Processes involved in Low Voltage Technician Apprenticeship:
Inside Wireman – 4 Year Program
Type of Work by Inside Wiremen Performed: Install conduit, electrical wiring, fixtures, and electrical apparatus inside. commercial buildings and in a multitude of industrial settings.
Major duties for Inside Wiremen include:
- Planning and initiating projects
- Establishing temporary power during construction
- Establishing grounding systems
- Installing electrical service to buildings and other structures
- Establishing power distribution within a project
- Planning and installing raceway systems
- Installing new wiring and repairing old wiring
- Providing power and controls to motors, HVAC, and other equipment
- Installing receptacles, lighting systems, and fixtures
- Troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems
- Installing and repairing traffic signals, outdoor lighting, and outdoor power feeders
- Installing fire alarm systems
- Solar
You will be attending class for a total of 180 hours per year. Classes will be held one day a week from 7:30-4:30 every other week from August thru June. The apprentice will continue to work gaining “On the Job Training” (OJT) the rest of the time. All students are required to have access to the internet with a working computer/laptop or tablet as homework will be done on-line.
Aptitude Test:
If you meet the basic requirements, you will be scheduled to take the ETA apprenticeship test battery. The test battery consists of two (2) tests. It will take approximately two and a half hours to complete. The number of items and the amount of time allotted for each test is as follows:
Algebra and Functions (33 items – 46 minutes to complete) This tests your ability to solve problems using algebra.
Reading Comprehension (36 items – 51 minutes to complete) This tests your ability to obtain information from written passage.
Low Voltage Technician – 3 Year Program (4,800 on-the-job hours)
Work Processes involved in Low Voltage Technician Apprenticeship:
- Residential: Wiring of residences, duplexes, and small apartment buildings along with necessary shop work and preparation.
- Commercial: Wiring of public, commercial, school, and hospital buildings; the installation and repair of all equipment therein; and necessary shop work and preparation.
- Industrial: Wiring of all industrial buildings and equipment; the maintenance, repair, and alteration of the same; and necessary shop work and preparation.
Specialized: Wiring of systems which include sound data transmission, telephone, LAN, fiber optics, closed circuit television, fire alarm systems, energy management systems, security systems along with the servicing and troubleshooting of telecommunications systems.
Mandatory school is held September through May; one night per week for 4 hours. Books, tuition, and lab fees will be approximately $1,200 – $1,400 per year.
